IMPOSSIBLE This Or That Tag

This tag started over at Paper Fury and looked like so much fun. Here it goes!

Series or standalone

Argh starting out with a horrible one.

In my completely non-scientific sampling of books I’ve read, I find the standalones tend to be a little better quality—they’re more carefully crafted narratives that make great use of time. Of course, that isn’t always the case, but whenever I’m thinking that a book is just perfectly crafted, it’s probably a standalone.

That said, I think I’m going to go with series here, because I just enjoy them more. They’re more fun and there’s a more fleshed-out world to dig into.

Magic earned or magic born

Hmm. I’m pretty lukewarm on Chosen Ones with Special Powers, so I don’t love the idea of magic born. All the examples of magic earned that I can think of, though, are a combination of both. The person is born with abilities but has to train to use them well, and that’s what makes them powerful.

I think I’m going to go with magic earned, but when I say that, I’m thinking of works like Avatar (airbender, not James Cameron) where the characters were born with powers but they’re extraordinary because of their passion and learning.

Enemies-to-lovers or friends-to-lovers

Of COURSE I love them both, but I’m going to go with enemies-to-lovers. More dramatic and less of a Nice Guy™ effect.

Hilarious banter or emotional ruin

I’m a lover of comedy in TV and theatre (I also write mostly comedy) but in books, I want that angst. Tear my heart out.

Love triangle or insta love

Insta love. Yes, it’s often terrible, but there are a few stories of insta-love that I really liked (most recently, The Sun Is Also a Star) and I can’t think of a single love triangle I wasn’t annoyed by.

Keyboard-smash fantasy names or all names start with same letter

Oh my goodness, vomit and double vomit. I guess keyboard-smash so at least I can tell them apart.

Mean parents or dead parents

Hmm. Dead parents.

Supermodel looks or constantly says how “plain” they are

HATE HATE HATE THEM BOTH. But I’m going to go with the latter, because I’ve realized there is one example of this that I actually find quite precious:

anne hair
CARROTS??????

Face on the cover vs typography on cover

Typography all the way! I don’t really like humans on covers, especially actual photographs. (But if you are going to put a picture of a person on the cover, please include the head.)

Villain turning a little good or hero turning a little bad

Both are super fun, but I think I’m leaning towards the first one. Doesn’t make me feel sad.

Yikes. That was brutal.

I’m sure some of those will be ~controversial~ so let me know in comments if you think I’m crazy.
